Gotland

The island of Gotland in the mid Baltic is the largest of the Baltic islands. Since Viking age and through the middle ages its strategic location at the cross-roads between east and west has made it very prosperous. In 1361 the main city Visby, was concord by the Danish king Valdemar Atterdag (=New Dawn) and the island remained under Danish rule until the peace at Brømsebro in 1645. Visby until this day has an incredibly well preserved medieval ring wall with towers around it.

Due to its chalky underground and special climatic conditions the flora is very special and one owes oneself a bicycle ride exploring the landscape (we bring our own Bromptons, but you can rent a bicycle anywhere on Gotland). Several places along the coast you may find the so called 'rauker' i.e. chalk pillars eroded in the coastline and displaying sculptural beauty. We have visited Gotland several times on our way to Stockholm in 1987 and on our way to Latvia in 1995
