Bornholm & Chr.Ø

Bornholm is the largest Danish island not connected to the rest of the country by bridge, reachable only by flight or boat. Furthermore Bornholm is approximately 75 nm away from any other part of 'mainland' Denmark. For many years the island was the easternmost part of NATO lying only 50 nm north of Poland. The island is completely its own with a dialect of its own and a very different rocky geography not least the small rocky archipelago Ertholmene comprising two inhabited isles: Christiansø and Frederiksø (ø=isle) and six smaller named skerries. Originally established as a naval base (in the 17th century) and now a very special place with less than 100 inhabitants and well worth a visit (preferably out of season and on your own keel). We have visited Bornholm and Ertholmene in 1999, 2006 og 2009.
